Doula Training

Elaine offers DONA-approved doula trainings. These Labor Support Skills Workshops use texts and supplementary literature, slides, video and role play to build theoretical knowledge and practical skills for both prospective and experienced doulas.

Attending a workshop constitutes one step in the DONA (Doulas Of North America) certification process.

The workshop will include an in-depth exploration and discussion of the following topics:

  • Just another day in a woman's life?
  • The long-term impact of a woman's first childbirth
  • The art and practice of labor support
  • Labor pain and the "gate control" theory of pain relief
  • Non-pharmacologic methods of pain relief in labor
  • Introduction to Doulas of North America (DONA)
  • Prenatal and postpartum contact between doula and client
  • Ethics and standards of practice fo the doula
  • Working with hospital staff
  • The ideal birth exercise
  • Difficult or demanding labors
  • Cesaerean birth

    Prerequisites

    Before the course, participants should have a basic knowledge of:

    • Anatomy of the reproductive system and breasts
    • Physiology of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding
    • Definitions of medical terms regarding labor
    • Pain medication administration and effects
    • Normal newborn appearance

    • Participants can get the necessary foundation knowledge by::

      • Attending a series of childbirth education classes
      • Attending Introduction to Childbirth, which is offered as an addition to the Labor Support Skills training
      • Viewing as many birth videos as possible
      • Attending some births if possible
      • Reading "Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn" by Penny Simkin
